Guanabana is the Brazilian name for Soursop. It is a native tree of the countries of central and southern America and the Caribbean. The scientific name of this evergreen, broadleaf and flowering tree is Annona muricata. Guanabana is also reported to grow in the countries of Africa that lie in the sub-Saharan region near the tropics. In recent times it is also grown in some parts of Pacific islands and Southeastern Asia. It is thought that this species became popular in Southeast Asia when it was traded to Philippines from Mexico. The Guanabana tree lies in the same species as the Chirimoya and lies in the family of Pawpaw. It is reported that it has the combined flavor of a pineapple and a Strawberry, with slight sour tinges that give way to a creamy flavor.
